Jerry Ashton

Co-Founder, RIP Medical Debt | Founder, End Veteran Debt

Jerry Ashton is the Co-Founder of RIP Medical Debt, the nonprofit that has helped forgive more than $11.8 billion in medical debt for over 7.4 million Americans. With over forty years of experience in the credit and collections industry, Jerry was semi-retired when his journalism background from his U.S. Navy service led him to New York City to document Occupy Wall Street — an experience that transformed his life.

He joined The Rolling Jubilee, a charity emerging from Occupy that sought to bring attention to medical debt, and with his colleague Craig Antico, helped erase more than $30 million in unpaid debts. When that project ended, the two co-founded RIP Medical Debt in 2014 to carry the mission forward.

Now serving on RIP’s Board of Directors, Jerry continues his work through End Veteran Debt, a new initiative dedicated to abolishing debt for U.S. veterans and their families.
